Information needed to file your individual taxes

Before you begin preparing your tax return, make sure you have the Social Security numbers and dates of birth for yourself, your spouse, and any dependents.

Be sure to report all income, including state and local income tax refunds, unemployment benefits, taxable alimony, and gambling winnings.

Gather documentation for your deductions and credits, such as childcare costs, education expenses, adoption costs, home mortgage interest, and charitable donations.

Remember to account for any taxes you've already paid, like estimated tax payments or withheld taxes, as these can reduce your final tax bill or increase your refund.
